The French foreign minister Jean-Yves le Drian says that the mercenaries in west africa have been working with Moscow. The meeting will discuss both regional and international issues which include Ukraine and the sahel-saharan strip. The French will express concerns of Russian actions in these events and the fact that Mali’s military junta is closely recruiting Russian mercenaries. France has postponed trips to Moscow and have begun to diplomatically thwart some of these issues. The postponement of the trip is rather unfortunate because these talks have been trying to be formed since 2018, to diminish mistrust between the two countries.

I believe that these talks will be beneficial. With russian mercenaries involved in west africa it could have a bad blow back, due to the significance that france has in that area. France has every right to be concerned on how they are treating this situation. A mother country will always be concerned about what is going on in the country they developed. Though it does not make any sense for the Kremlin to have mercenaries in the west africa region. The postponement of diplomatic talks are not good because without the talks it can only be resolved with military power if it just fades away which it is unlikely to do.

This relates to the class because of the balance of power theory. France is trying to balance the Russian power in west Africa by limiting where the mercenaries are working. West Africa was also under French rule, so the French are acting in its national interest to help their old territories. Also this story could go with realist thinking that the power of a state is countered only by the power of other states, the French would be the state that is countering Russian power. The russian mercenaries could also be violating international law and disrupting the international system. The French are also using diplomatic skill rather than using a military approach to prevent the Russians from intervening.

https://www.reuters.com/world/china/french-ministers-raise-concerns-with-russia-west-africa-activities-2021-11-09/ French and Russian ministers will meet in Paris on Friday to discuss the Kremlin’s activities in West Africa.
