The goal of said agreement is to increase border cooperation with the countries surrounding North Macedonia, all of which are in the EU. Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission was the one who directly negotiated with North Macedonian President Dimitar Kovačevski. Ursula also says that she hopes this agreement will strengthen relations between Frontex, the EU coast border control organization, and other countries in the Balkans to secure the EU’s outer borders. But Frontex may be facing other issues as there have been multiple allegations of abuse and misconduct.

While this negotiation isn’t a really big deal on the grand scale, I think it’s interesting that North Macedonia and a collection of other balkan countries aren’t in the EU. I guess I just don’t know that much about that part of the world. I also didn’t know that the EU had their own border control organization, and that it works alongside the countries to protect their borders. While I don’t really know what this agreement will do for either party, it’s interesting to see how Europe, especially the southern, balkan area handle the immigration and migrant process. This is what this agreement is about, after all. Especially because there have been a lot of xenophobic and anti-immigration sentiment built up in that region and Turkey.

This article is definitely related to class because it’s in my region of the world, because Frontex is involved with the EU and that’s an IGO, and because we are talking about different theories of how people perceive the world, and immigration is a very big part of that.

Article: https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2022/10/26/the-eu-and-north-macedonia-sign-migration-agreement In October of 2022, North Macedonia signed a migration agreement with the EU.
