A rough 10,00 haven’t replaced their license plates, and Kosovo is issuing warnings, fines and even driving bans. There was a talk between Kosovo and Serbia in Brussels this past week, with little success. After both sides came out after eight hours, and have expressed annoyance with each other and the agreements. An EU diplomat said, “both bear full responsibility for the failure of the talks today and for any escalation of violence that might occur on the ground in the following days.”

Apparently a failure over discussion on license plates will cause a violence escalation? That’s one of the weirdest things I’ve ever heard. Nor did I think that license plates were a big deal. I also don’t understand what Serbia could do in this situation, they don’t see Kosovo as an independent state, but what could they do? Support people not changing their license plates in Kosovo? I’m kind of confused, but so be it.

This article is related to what we’re doing in class because not only is Kosovo and Serbia in my assigned part of the world, but Kosovo is also a partially recognized state. The Balkans, which is where these countries are located, are also my focus for my research paper.

Article: https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2022/11/21/emergency-meeting-for-serbia-and-kosovo-in-brussels-over-car-registration-crisis In an effort to try and consider itself more independent from their parent country Serbia, Kosovo is pushing for their people to switch from Serbian issued license plates, to a Kosovo Republic license plate.
