events hosted by two of the charities he founded – The International Sustainability Unit and Business in the Community.

Calling for “practical and ambitious action”, Prince Charles spoke of his hopes for Sky’s Ocean Rescue campaign.

He said it was “essential” that as well as the efforts of companies, consumers should “play their role in lessening the burden on our environment”.

“And this is why I am so hopeful about the Sky ocean campaign and its ability to win hearts and minds,” Charles said.

“If current trends continue the implications for the viability of the ocean ecosystem on which humankind relies so heavily are stark indeed.”

Companies including Adidas, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Dell, Marks and Spencer and Unilever have been involved in the drive, and helped with a litter picking exercise on the banks of Rainham Marshes in Essex to see the scale of plastic debris washed up from the River Thames.

Graham Fox, packaging operations manager for Innocent drinks, told Sky News: “I don’t know anyone within the packaging industry that deliberately goes out to say ‘I’m going to put too much packaging in the market or I’m going to over package a product’.

“That’s not what happens.

“It’s how we manage consumer behaviour, it’s how we manage design to make it as good as it can be.”

Richard Ellis, vice president for corporate social responsibility for Walgreens Boots Alliance, said: “We’re now experimenting with cotton wool buds that you can flush down the toilet that dissolve on contact with sewage.

“So in effect we are starting to say ‘if this is a consumer behaviour, how can that happen in a way that is sustainable?'”

Economic considerations have at times held businesses back from coming up with new packaging concepts.

Gudrun Cartwright, from Business in the Community, said: “I think one of the issues, especially with plastics recently, has been the low oil price.

“So to recycle and do new things with plastics is not necessarily the best thing to do – it can be cheaper to make new plastic.”

Sky’s Ocean Rescue campaign is raising awareness of the damage being done to our marine environment worldwide by single use plastics.

More than eight million tonnes of plastic is thrown away each year and washed out to sea.

Sky Ocean Rescue: Prince Charles in rallying call to consumers The Prince of Wales speaks of his hopes for the Sky Ocean Rescue campaign as he calls for “ambitious action”
