The German decision stems from fears of escalating the conflict, possibly entangling the nations of NATO in the war with Russia. Throughout the conflict, Germany has contributed the second-greatest amount of aid to Ukraine, with the US leading the charge. Germany has promised to support Ukraine as long as necessary, a controversial decision on the domestic front. Despite their decision to withhold long range missiles, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius claims that if Ukraine makes the choice to attack targets within Russia’s borders, their decision is in line with international law and precedent. Moreover, Germany has announced their decision to halve the budget for aid for Ukraine to ease domestic tensions.

This is an important and very divisive act of a NATO country in regards to the conflict with Russia, as Germany is obviously distancing themselves from Ukraine in terms of providing outright military resources. I think that this will affect other NATO countries in the region that are strong allies with Germany. I think this will affect relations between Germany and the United States as well, as the two countries were the most generous in terms of aid to Ukraine. By halving their budget and refusing to provide long range missiles, this could be a sign of Germany stepping back from a large scale role in assisting Ukraine in the fight against Russia.

I truly don’t think that Ukraine has any choice in how to respond to Germany’s choice; they are dependent on outside military aid, which Germany has historically provided. I also don’t think that the US and Britain are going to change their own objectives in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, due to their own relations with Russia and Putin. I think that the organization of NATO may be at a bit of a crossroads, as two major countries (Germany and the US) take two different paths in their relations with Russia.

In terms of the Global Arena, major players are involved in many different ways for various reasons. The nations of Germany, Russia, and Ukraine are involved who also influence major events. A major foundation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is the spread of people, as the Russian nation spreads beyond its geographical regions (dating back to the Soviet spread of Russian peoples). As talked about in class, multi-state nations (like the Russians) can cause conflict as people identify with nationalism outside of their home country, which can spark tension, similar to in Ukraine. Moreover, inter-governmental organizations such as NATO (military alliance) work together on mutual goals, as shown in the alliance between Germany and Ukraine, as Germany supports Ukraine’s presence and validity in the EU and their efforts to join NATO.

Link to Article: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20240913-germany-insists-it-won-t-give-ukraine-long-range-missiles The German Prime Minister has declared that the country will not provide long range weapons to Ukraine, in response to a meeting between the United States and Britain regarding their plans of providing Kyiv with long range missiles.
