While acknowledging risks in war, Stoltenberg stressed that the greatest risk for Europe would be a Russian victory in Ukraine. He welcomed recent discussions on allowing Ukraine to strike Russian targets with Western weapons. Despite concerns about escalation, Stoltenberg highlighted that the conflict is already a full-scale war initiated by Moscow. Ukraine seeks to target Russian military assets involved in attacks on Ukrainian cities despite Putin’s warnings.

This article shows the importance of how the war could change in the favor of Ukraine if they chose to target critical Russian military infrastructure, potentially weakening Russia’s offensive capabilities. It also shows the balance NATO allies must maintain to support Ukraine without escalating the fight into a war between NATO and Russia. This means that if Russia manages to defeat Ukraine it would cause worry from NATO about where Russia would aim for next causing a war between NATO and Russia. The article shows the delicate balance NATO has to keep in this conflict between Russia and Europe. I think that NATO should allow Ukraine to use missiles against Russia to help defeat them. If Russia wins, they’ll try to attack other countries in Europe and take over more land. Russia has always had tension with Europe and was largely driven by religious and cultural differences, as well as Russia’s expansionist policies. So these tense times haven’t just come out of nowhere, they’ve been built up and with Putin ruling things have gotten worse.

In this situation, Ukraine may advocate for Western long-range weapons to target key Russian military bases, aiming to weaken Russia’s ability to continue its invasion against Ukraine. NATO Allies will try and make a decision individually, trying to balance support for Ukraine but not escalate the conflict. While some may argue for more military aid others may not want to get more involved to not cause Russia to attack. Russia would dislike the conversations being held and may see more involvement may cause Russia to see that as a sign of joining the war.

In class, we’ve discussed how more involvement in this conflict could cause Russia to see it as a sign of war. It’s a thin line between aiding Ukraine and not being involved. If NATO doesn’t help Ukraine, there’s a chance Russia could win the invasion and target other countries in and near NATO. If NATO does get involved more, there’s a chance Russia could see that as them joining the conflict. It’s a hard decision for them to make but they need to be cautious in the matter not wanting to overstep in the boundaries they’ve set.

Link: https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2024/09/16/7475412/ On September 16, 2024, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenburg stated that the decision to allow Ukraine to launch long-range strikes on Russian territory would be made by individual allies, emphasizing the need for close consultation.
