He stated that the US could secure Greenland “the easy way or the hard way,” and dismissed lease agreements as insufficient. While the White House has confirmed that buying Greenland has been considered, it has not ruled out annexation by force.

Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected these claims, stressing that Greenland is not for sale and warning that military action would seriously damage the transatlantic alliance. Greenland’s political leaders, including opposition parties, issued a joint statement condemning what they called US disregard for their country and reaffirmed that Greenlanders alone must decide their future.

Greenland’s strategic importance stems from its Arctic location between North America and Europe, making it crucial for missile early-warning systems and regional surveillance. The US already operates the Pituffik military base there and can deploy additional troops under existing agreements with Denmark.

Trump’s comments have alarmed Nato allies, who have rallied behind Denmark, emphasising collective Arctic security, respect for sovereignty, and international law. Interest in Greenland has also grown due to its vast natural resources, increasingly accessible as climate change reduces ice cover.

This article is of extreme importance as the global stage continues to advance and shift over time due to a variety of things like climate change. Although I don’t think that the acquisition of Greenland is attainable at this time for many reasons like the US unfamiliarity with the area, competitors, and mainly the push back from Denmark, Greenland, and IGOs like EU and NATO. I understand the goals for the US and the benefit that the acquisition of Greenland would give the US, like increased security against competing countries like Russia and China and access to natural resources and minerals providing economic gain to the US. I don’t think this is going to be out of reality very soon as the US, I feel, is unequipped to take Greenland and succeed in their aspirations and economic goal as it is new territory.

Denmark is expressing a feeling of resistance that they have told the US that Greenland is not for sale or annexation, and that they will use military force, which would cause major maybe un-recoverable damage to the IGO, NATO. The US is aiming to convince NATO of the importance and viability of the US taking control of Greenland as it is a security threat if China and Russia gain control of it and power in the arctic ocean. NATO has continued to express concerns and is agreeing with Denmark on this issue currently.

This issue is connected to the US and Western Hemisphere security because if China and Russia get a foothold in the region it could cause problems in the future. This issue could affect and damage NATO and the EU and the relationships between those countries because “an attack on one is an attack on all.” The security worry is extremely vital for the United States as China and Russia increase in power, which is causing the US to begin to take primitive measures against them, by looking to attain greenland.

link to article- https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c78vj5n7jg3o President Donald Trump has said the United States needs to “own” Greenland to prevent Russia and China from gaining influence there, arguing that ownership is necessary for effective defence.
