Kaja Kallas has denied the claims of “civilizational erasure” in Europe, supporting a difference in approach to immigration unlike the US. She still agrees with senator Marco Rubio’s statement that the US and EU need each other, but would like to agree to disagree with the effects of immigration presented by Rubio. Many US officials have been employing parts of The Great Replacement Theory in recent talks about immigration, which Europe is very familiar with. The Great Replacement Theory was written by a far right French novelist in 2011, which is based off Nazi policy and Hitler’s theory on eugenics that led to The Final Solution. Many Europeans were shocked by extreme statements and actions of US officials reflecting policies that led to such horrible things in the continents past. The US also warned of censorship in the EU, even though Europe has all 15 top spots in the Global Press Index while the US is in 57th place. EU representatives further explained the greater importance of supporting Ukraine in their fight against Russia, over current US xenophobic politics and claims of white genocide.

This article shows pushback from Europe against their greatest ally in the US, setting a president of new shifting relationships. The EU needed to establish boundaries with the new US foreign policy and address actions they were not willing to carry out. This will likely lead to a growing divide between the US and EU moving forward. The US should stop pressuring Europe to take on American politics when greater problems are at hand. Europe should continue to set boundaries and find new allies other than the US.

These statements can be connected to what we learned in class with Liberal and Identity Theory. These diplomatic exchanges between a state and an IGO reflect much of what is in Liberal Theory. The US also has a lot of shared identity with Europe in cultural background and politics, so the US is giving better treatment of Europe much like what is theorized in Identity Theory.

Link to article: https://www.france24.com/en/europe/20260215-europe-bashing-eu-top-diplomat-kallas-rejects-us-talk-civilisational-decline Following numerous negative comments from the US about the EU and current immigration Europe, the EU’s top diplomat has addressed disagreement.
