Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized the U.S. embargo and promised continued Russian support for Cuba’s sovereignty. Russia is considering sending humanitarian fuel shipments to help ease Cuba’s crisis. The shortages have already disrupted tourism and energy supplies. Despite improving relations between Moscow and Washington, the Kremlin says supporting Cuba would not interfere with those efforts.

Tensions with Cuba and the United States seem to have ramped up following the oust of Venezuelan President Maduro. Cuba and Venezuela previously have close ties under Maduro’s presidency and were part of the anti-united states regional power group within latin america. There were even Cuban officers killed in the oust of Maduro in Caracas, but more importantly with the US stopping oil routes to Cuba, they have to look for another source for oil: Russia. Russia and Cuba in history have relations and this concerns the US with having a foe so close to our land as seen in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Russia restrengthening these ties could be seen as a way to intimidate the US from Russia and to pull back our involvement in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

I could see trade relations between the Russian government and Cuba beginning to ramp up and the United States getting more and more involved with Venezuela, as seen by the recent shipment of medical supplies from the U.S. to Venezuela. Although the Kremlin says that supporting Cuba will not interfere with the improving relations between Russia and the U.S., I doubt it will not affect it at all. Trump could see the Cuba-Russia relations as a threat to him and pull back from relations with Russia and maybe get more involved with the Russia-Ukraine war, or even see this threat and pull back from the Russia-Ukraine war to not have a hostile relationship with Russia so close to our borders. Trump and Putin seem to have a fairly good relationship, so it will be interesting to see if Trump will support the new relationship with Cuba or retract it.

Current tensions between the US, Cuba, and Russia are a non-armed conflict. The US oil sanctions on Cuba show the use of economic pressure rather than military force. With each country in the past using trade tactics and cyber warfare. Additionally, this conflict resembles a local interstate conflict focused on Cuba and United States relations in the Caribbean, but if Russia gets more involved, it could become a regional conflict, expanding influence across Latin America.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/russia-cuba-putin-rodriguez-lavrov-oil-embargo-80ed0a0ae6c50935e90f56feb15f7291 Cuba’s foreign minister visited Moscow as the island faces severe fuel shortages worsened by U.S. oil sanctions.
