Hungary is coming up on elections this year. This will be one of the most influential elections of the recent history for the EU and for Hungary. This comes as the current PM Viktor Orban has been known for blocking EU decisions. Orban does not follow the common flow of beliefs surrounding Ukraine, Russia, or immigration. For the elections the opposition has put up Peter Magyar. He has made public promises that if he is elected he will strengthen ties to the EU. After hearing this many influential EU leaders and PMs have now stated that they hope Orban loses in favor for the opposition leader Magyar. This election could stake a new course for Hungary depending on who wins the elections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hungary for the longest time has been known as one of the outliers in the EU. For example, a couple of weeks ago, Hungary blocked an aid package to Ukraine because some of their oil pipelines were hit. This decision was met with extreme distaste from other EU member states. Additionally, from what I have gathered, Orban is a sort of an emotional leader at times. Taking attacks on himself to mean attacks on Hungary all together. So if he ends up winning I wonder if relations with other EU member states would continue to sour. The article also talks about the EU’s plan for if he is elected. The EU will try and use the 16 Billion Euro defense stimulus to try and coerce Orban into submitting and allowing for the Ukraine package to go through. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hungary – Hungary’s response to the comments will most likely differ depending on who is elected. If Orban is elected I think it is just another big step to Hungary and the EU severing relations. For right now they need each other too much, but when the Ukraine Russia war ends, that may be a different story. On the other hand if Magyar is elected we will see, if he follows through on his promise, a strengthening of relations with the EU. The comments will most likely not be held in high regard, most states and people within those states do not like it when other states try and interfere within their elections. But overall the effects that Orban has on the EU, if removed, would create an entirely different and largely unified EU. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this article I see themes of soft power and globalization. For soft power, the EU indirectly is trying to influence the people of Hungary to elect Magyar by introducing new policies like the of the defence stimulus. For globalization, the EU which consists of other states is trying to somewhat meddle in the choices that Hungarians make. This election is not being framed as an election that will change a lot in Hungary directly but it will change how Hungary responds to Global powers like the EU, Russia, and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
