The EU, in response to these events, has considered different emergency measures. These may look like like strategic energy reserves, diversifying suppliers, and renewable energy expansion. However EU officials have been very vocal that a long term solution is needed to be found and that long term preparation should be started so they are not caught in this situation again. Lastly, the EU may have to find a way to become energy independent from outside actors, this proposes so many different challenges from how it will be achieved, who will pay for it, who will maintain it, etc.

This article helps to highlight how globalization can serve to create vulnerabilities for states. Especially for those who rely on other states for means of energy. In this, like I talked about above, this plan for the EU, to me, seems to be more talk than anything. They do not have the means as of right now to make it so that they can be energy independent. Also, just a thought, I was thinking about one of the main reasons for why Russia hasn’t been using anything more than conventional forces and munitions on Ukraine. One of the biggest reasons was that there is so much Russian infrastructure running through Ukraine like the oil pipelines. So if the EU says publicly they will no longer be looking for Russian oil, I feel like that is them indirectly stepping away from their current position of totally and utter support for the Ukrainian war.

The EU will most likely find renewable sources of energy. I have a feeling that wind turbines and solar will not be enough. I could see a huge boom in nuclear energy being installed. Lastly, I’m not sure that all of the EU states would be on board with this, for example Hungary has been blocking an aid package to Ukraine for the fact that one of the oil pipelines was hit and hurt. Russia will be tough to decide. On one hand you could argue that they are to busy in Ukraine to be doing much of anything in response to this. However in my own opinion I think that Russia will try and leverage lower costs for oil for states like Hungary to try and force them to not allow the renewable energy packages to pass.

I see power the EU is using hard power against Russia and Iran and the Russians will try to use smart power to try and regain their economic interests in the area. For interdependence, the actions of one of the states in the EU directly affects the others (e.g. Hungary and EU votes). Lastly, sustainability due to the EU looking into sustainable energy practices.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/europe-must-prepare-long-lasting-energy-shock-eu-energy-commissioner-tells-ft-2026-04-03 EU officials warn that Europe could be facing a long term energy crisis due to the continuing war in Russia, and the actions in Iran like those of the Hormuz Strait.
