Foreign companies and foreign producers are making steel at an increasingly cheaper cost. This has led to steel laborers feeling that their jobs are insecure and are in danger of being subverted by those in other countries that are willing to work for much less money. In response to these worries the steel companies have asked for domestic production incentives and foreign production detergents. This would include things like tariffs, trade protections, industrial policy support.

The reason that I am writing about this is due to a past article that I wrote about. It depicted the German Chancellor calling for a huge anti-Chinese trade stance within the EU. So seeing this I am thinking about how the opinions within the EU for the Chinese trade dilemma and the overall foreign production dilemma has changed significantly over the past couple of years. There is definite switch to wanting the EU to get away from foreign production and to try and get more into supporting and subsidizing internal blue collar jobs like in this case with steel laborers.

EU officials and policy makers – they may introduce tariffs or subsidies to help increase the health and the strength of EU steel industries. They may also make efforts to try and balance trade rules in the WTO in order to help reduce the incentives for companies to try and use foreign cheaper labor. Steel companies – They will continue to try and lobby governments within the EU and will most likely invest into new methods for steel working to decrease prices and increase incentive for buyers. Foreign producers – They will most likely try to challenge the tariffs and may lower prices to try and subvert the EU based incentives.

I see concepts of protectionism and globalization. Protectionism is what is being used to try and protect the steel industries within the EU and it is the justification for trying to make costly to use foreign based labor. It is the basis for the concept of protecting locally based industries. Globalization is the root of the way that the foreign workers that are able to make and transport the goods that the consumers within the EU want and will buy. Globalization also helps to explain the low wages. When the third world state has the capabilities to make the steel most likely that it would be laissez faire economics, making it cheaper for them to make and sell the goods.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/business/thyssenkrupps-steel-unit-pushes-eu-protect-special-steel-sector-2026-04-01/ EU steel companies are protesting and requesting the EU to introduce new legislation that would serve to protect the steel industry’s domestic production.
