UN calls Syrian crisis ‘Hell on Earth’, calls for resolution

BBC News— Eastern Ghouta has very literally been under fire recently, as there have been Russian-supported air strikes over the past few days in the area. The region is notably the last major area under rebel-control, and is in the process of being liberated. The Syrians claim to be executing a liberation from terrorists, but it has been reported that they were targeting the civilian population, therefore complicating matters. There have been about 350 civillians killed in these attacks, to go along with almost 880 injured. Most of the injuries and fatalities are said to be caused by the air strikes. Reports earlier last night confirm that another 70 people were killed just Wednesday alone, and the total could be around 366 now. Dr. Bassam went on record told BBC, “They targeted everything: shops, markets, hospitals, schools, mosques, everything. Maybe every minute we have 10 or 20 air strikes… I will treat someone – and after a day or two they come again, injured again.“ He is among the general consensus that believes that the situation is catastrophic, and that the international community is leaving Eastern Ghouta out to dry. There has been relatively no humanitarian assistance(only one group has been allowed in thus far) for the people, and the civilians are beginning to starve. To make matters worse, there may be no end in sight. Kuwait and Sweden proposed a 30-day cease fire, but it appears that the Russians will block the motion. Iran is stated to be in contact with Syria, Turkey, and Russia in effort to help alleviate tensions in the region, but the efforts may be proven futile. The UN human rights commissioner is urging for this matter to be resolved, hopefully to some avail.
