When I first read the headline about Egypt putting it’s prisoners to work on the inside of prison I was intrigued and shocked because I had no idea how that could be a good idea or how it work. Egypt has found a way to allow its prisoners to work while behind bars and allow them to still contribute to society and help Egypt’s economic troubles. I definitely think that if these inmates are making money then it should go to their families that are struggling on the outside, or if the inmate is locked up for something they did to another person, such as rape or murder, than the money should go to the victim of the crime or the family of the victim if the victim is deceased.
Another way that putting prisoners to work is a good idea is because they can sell these products for less than what the super markets are charging, this way citizens that can’t quite afford shopping at super markets on a regular basis, they can shop at kiosks where these prison goods are sold on average of thirty percent cheaper than what the supermarkets are charging. Another way that having inmates contribute to society while they’re on the inside is that they are building skills that they can put towards a real job once they get out of prison. Also prisoners can maybe find a passion for something that they are working on on the inside that they never would have done if they weren’t in jail. Also if a prisoner has a good production rate and doesn’t get into any conflicts then maybe working could be a way for prisoners to convince the government that they messed up once and deserve a sentence reduction. This is one of the best ideas i’ve heard of and I think that more countries should adapt this in their prisons.
