Saudi Arabia has always taken legal action against women rights activists. But that might be about to change. A report released by a member of the United Kingdom’s House of Lords has called on the world’s leading economies to shun the G20 summit hosted by Saudi Arabia this year unless jailed women’s rights activists are released. “These women are being detained because they are advocating for women’s rights and it is seen as an affront to the power structures of Saudi Arabia,” Baroness Helena Kennedy, a prominent Scottish barrister, said in a video statement released on Wednesday. She states that she wanted all of those participating in the G20 meeting (hosted by the crown prince of Saudi Arabia) to say that they will only participate if you release these women. The United States, India and the UK are among countries that will attend this year’s G20 summit starting on November 21, hosted by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. And a big theme of G20 is women empowerment. The UN women’s rights committee called for their immediate release.
In my eyes without any real consequences coming at Saudi Arabia besides losing the UK coming to the meetings, Saudi Arabia is not going to feel threatened in the slightest. I think that other members of G20 need to be backing up the UK like the United states and India. A statement from a New Tork based group was released, but what is this actually going to do without Saudi Arabia feeling threatened. We are obviously one of the biggest superpowers in the world, if not the biggest, and all it would take was a little bit of threatening from the USA to convince Saudi Arabia to release these women. But with everything going on right now with the election and Covid-19, we are solely focused on other things.
