Last friday, November 27, Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was killed after an explosion of a car and gun shots immediately following striked the scientist. It was said that this attack was carried out remotely. Iranian general, Ali Shamkhani told reporters that no doubt it was Israel and its national intelligence agency, that were behind the killing of Fakhrizadeh. Several reports suggest that Israel wanted to kill this top nuclear scientist for over 20 years now. A weapon was recovered from the scene of the killing and the logo of the Israeli military were on it. After the attack, Iran has begun planning for a revenge attack on Israel for killing one of their top nuclear scientists. They have called upon the rest of the world for help because of this “act of terror.” Several years ago, a couple of high priority nuclear scientists were assassinated and Israel has been a suspect of those attacks.

With Iran trying to get nuclear weapons themselves and catch up with the other global superpowers, and if Israel is truly behind these attacks, they might have something coming for them soon. With the United States being allies with Israel, it is also possible that they were behind these attacks in order to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and causing even more terror in that region. Sabotaging nuclear scientists can cause an uproar in reaction because those scientists are precious and very costly. Taking out numerous scientists is also questionable since Israel and Iran have a history with one another and are in a current state of a proxy war. We might see a attack against Israel in the upcoming months and if there is a revenge attack we could see the United States getting involved since we are close allies with Israel which could drag in more countries.

From a realist perspective we can see this attack as a human nature attack and therefore being a selfish attack by preventing another country from developing nuclear weapons. While we do not know what Iran would do with those nuclear weapons, they are on the uprise to be a global superpower and with the mastery of nuclear weapons, they would be right up with Russia and China. While Israel might have taken a security dilemma to protect their territory and slow down the advancement of the nuclear weapons, they could have a much worse attack happen to them if Iran were to get revenge. Ultimately, Iran will eventually develop nuclear weapons and that will cause even more stress in that region, but sabotaging a countries high priority person will cause even more problems later on.
