Last week, the border between Ceuta, Spain and Morocco had finally been taken under control after a mass crossing of migrants and refugees from Morocco piled at the border. This resulted in a plight of hundreds of unaccompanied children stranded in and outside of the Spanish enclave. Those hundreds of unaccompanied children were crammed into a charity-run warehouse for a 10 day compulsory quarantine under police watch in the North African territory. Some children attempted to escape by climbing onto the buildings’ roof. The Spanish government announced that 200 of the young migrants and refugees who were already in Ceuta before the mass crossing would be transferred to the mainland in order to leave space in the enclave government-run territory. Under Spain’s laws, children remain under the care of regional authorities until their relatives can be found or they reach adulthood. Multiple of those who crossed during the mass crossing last week had decided to voluntarily return after either not being able to find any shelter in Ceuta or finding no possibility of being able to continue onto the European mainland.
Thousands of people accept to cross the border from Morocco to Spain each week but it is hard for many. Spain has tightened their border between Spain because of the amount of people who attempt to get in. It can start to seem like it gets harder and harder for people to seek refugee there. Many escape Morocco because they can not find work, money, or healthcare for them and their loved ones. Because of the masses of people who keep trying to cross into Spain, Spain should open up their country for refugees and people who seek to a better life.
This situation can be related to situations and differences between poor and rich countries. It is clear to see that there are hundreds of differences between poor and rich countries and their needs. Sometimes rich countries decide to not open their borders to some because of stereotypical talk or because of their lack of helping their neighbors.
