Migrants in Libya are waiting to escape after a violent crackdown that led to a mass arrest and shooting. In the United Nations center in Tripoli, African American refugees are being detained by ‘unnecessary and disproportionate’ force, which includes shooting them dead. These asylum seekers are being targeted by the Libyan security forces, says UN human rights spokesperson Marta Hurtado. Due to Libya’s illegal migration issue, many people are stuck within the borders. Also, the NATO uprising in 2011, an increase in poverty in Africa and the Middle East has also been a cause for es In an attempt at escape, about 500 migrants fled the Gheriyan detention center, being chased and shot at by guards on their way out. A few days later, another big escape occurred. At least 6 people were killed.
My take on the article is that it is a really messed up situation all around. The brutality being used to control the immigrants is unfair and unethical in my opinion. When it comes to the future of Libya, it is unclear how things will pan out with immigration laws in the future. Additionally, these escapes are going to harm innocent civilians. As noted in the article, human trafficking has become more prevalent since the start of these journeys. Some historical context, as I mentioned earlier, was the NATO uprising and killing of longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi. This was the starting point that made Libya emerge as one of the most prominent points for refugees.
In reference to class, this can be brought back to the basic ideas of a domestic level of analysis since it is an ethical dilemma. Also, I’d say you could relate it to a multi-faceted cause since there are several different factors that caused the UN to start this conflict with Libya. Finally, you could also relate this to class by thinking about the collective goods problem. I believe this could be part of the identity principle. All in all, this article is a good relation to class because it discusses a country and their relations with the UN.
