On October 13, 2021 the top Turkeys top diplomat spoke out about cross border attacks from Syria. The recent attack from Syria that killed two Turkish police officers. Turkey said that two areas of Karkamis were hit with guided missiles that launched from YPG-controlled areas of Turkey. YPG is currently an organization backed by the United States of America. YPG is believed to be a Syrian wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party or the PKK, which has been designated as a terror group by Turkey and its allies in NATO. These attacks hit especially hard for Turkey because the United States and Russia had promised that they would make the YPG withdraw back 30 kilometers from the border. Now that YPG has had an attack on the homeland of Turkey it is creating resentment from Turkey towards Russia and the United States.
This will majorly affect the relationship between both Turkey and the United States and Turkey and Russia. It also now imposes the question to the United States if they will still back YPG based on their actions that they have recently had. The United States has a reputation of not backing or even negotiating with terror groups. It can also ask the question why hasn’t Turkeys NATO allies said or done anything to help Turkey. It will be interesting to see how the United States will deal with this with Turkey calling them out for not helping them with the YPG, and how the rest of the world will look at the United States.
This relates to the class because it is the current world’s largest power and one of the other worlds largest powers who promised a state to help. Now IGO’s like NATO will be looking at the United state because of them not doing anything to deal with terror groups which is what they are supposed to deal with those kind of groups. The world will now have their eyes on Russia and the United States as this plays out.
