On Wednesday November third the European Union launched a two year mission to train Mozambique military troops to fight an Islamic state linked insurgency in Cabo Delgado which is the country’s northernmost province. The revolt started in 2017 and has since escalated a ton. Over 3000 people have died and almost one million people have been displaced. Antonio Sanchez-Benedito Gaspar who is the european ambassador said “no country, no region and no organization can face these global challenges alone. Over this two year period the EU will train 11 Mozambican special force units. Mozambique has also accepted help from other countries including the United States.

The reason the European Union launched this mission is because not only do they believe that no country should go through battles alone but also because they don’t want conflicts to bleed into neighboring countries. Antonio Sanchez-Benedito Gaspar also said the main focus of this is to restore security in the province and they believe by training these special forces troops is the right and best step forward to rebuild security. Before this training started the army was being accused by rights groups of abuses against civilians. Although the government denies the allegations the European Union will work to make sure human rights abuse will not happen.

By the European Union launching this mission to support and train Mozambique special forces they are showing their national interest that they do not want these conflicts in Cabo Delgado to spill over national borders. The European Union also used the levels of analysis during this because they had to have thought about what would happen if they did not start training Mozambique special forces. This is shown because the European Union expressed concerns of the conflict spilling over national borders.
