Three Algerians have been bombed by claimed to be Moroccans. The Algerian trucks were hooked up with bombs which killed them. The Algerian president has blamed Morocco and said, “will not go unpunished.” Algeria just ended its relationship with Morocco due to hostile actions that need to be taken. It is uncertain at the time if actions will be taken towards the Moroccan government not only for the bombing but for other reasons as well. The United Nations called for the two countries to become close again but now that is not realistic. The attack was carried out by amateurs that used high-level bombs.
War breaking out between Algeria and Morocco is not out of the realm of possibility. An anonymous reporter mentioned, “If Algeria wants war, Morocco does not.” This would not be a good look for the Moroccans since they control 80% of the Western Sahara. Algeria also has the second strongest military in Africa, while Morocco has one of the weakest. A war between the two could shift up Africa as we know it. Morocco would not be in as much control as they are in now. I believe it is unlikely that a war would break out in the near future.
Algeria and Morocco used to be in a healthy alliance. All of sudden they turned against each other and now the term war is being thrown out. Alliances can change quickly and can also result in bad situations. Algeria realizes that Morocco has power and has reason to go to war with them. Algeria is most likely already starting alliance talks and trying to pursue other African nations to help join them in war. Morocco on the other hand won’t have much help from African nations as the other nations want to share some of the power.
