US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken recently visited Morocco and Algeria, looking to bring the them closer to the US, and closer to each other. The Biden Administration has been disconnected to North Africa for the most part since the start of the administration. Algeria has been concerned over the US’ refusal to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the highly disputed Western Sahara. The debate between the two African countries made them cut ties last August, and with that came border disputes, and a suspected drone attack killing a handful of civilians.

This has an important impact on all 3 countries involved. For the US, relations with these two have been tense in recent years, and relations need to improve for the 3 countries mutual interest. For Morocco and Algeria, the recognition of their respective states from the US is important to make an ally of the US, which every country wants. Blinken is set to settle all disagreements between the two African countries and the US policy of non-recognition. This is important and has lasting impacts for years to come on relation with Africa in the Western Sahara region.

This article relates to the topic about state recognition. The US doesn’t recognize sovereignty from Morocco in the Sahara, which concerns not just Morocco, but also Algeria as they are a neighbor of Morocco in the Sahara. The non-recognition was a policy put in place by the Trump Administration. Good or bad decision, the Biden Administration has stuck with the decision to not recognize the sovereignty.
