Arab leaders meet in Algeria for the second day of the 31st summit of the annual Arab conference, seeking common ground on several issues in the region. This meeting has the backdrop of rising inflation, food and energy shortages, drought and soaring cost of living in the region. The leaders of the region gathered for a two-day gathering in Algiers. The discussion included talks about establishment of diplomatic ties and four Arab countries, as the former far right Israeli minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies appear to be winning in the election. They also talked about the food and energy crisis aggravated by Russia’s war in Ukraine, leading to further problems with getting essential food and energy to the region. To help alleviate this issue, Turkey reports that Russia has agreed to return back to a Turkish and U.N. brokered deal that allows the shipment of millions of tons of Ukrainian grain through the black sea. Not only has the Arab conference allowed for talks of important manner, it also let Algeria showcase it’s leadership. Algeria is a major oil and gas supplier, and is seen as a key suplier by European countries.
This article is important because it shows just how the middle east is dealing with the lack of despreatly needed supplies from ukraine. This means the region will either have to hope for more brokered deals from Russia and the U.N., or find other countries to get their reasources from. This could forever have a lasting impact on these countries economies in the sense that they will dry up if they continue to try to rely on Ukraine for their food and gas. However bleak it may seem at this current time, I think it’s a good thing they had this confrence. I say this because it could mean that they are starting to try and fix the problem as a group.
The interesting part about the middle east is how they have an abundance of natural resources, so one might be wondering why a lot of people are starving in the middle east. The reason for this is poverty and the fact that not all resources are secured. That’s why the middle east desperately needs the food and gas from Ukraine. It also does not help that a lot of countries in the middle east are generally seen as less internationally credible, which is obviously unhelped by the situation of the United States being in the middle east for a time.
