Israeli Air Attack puts Aleppo International Airport out of commision

Last Updated 3/7/2023

Following earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, Israel “attacked” in some way Aleppo International Airport rendering humanitarian support delayed as unspecified damage was done to the airport forcing the delay/rerouting of humanitarian aid coming from airplanes. Israeli relations with Syria have never been particularly good, especially as Syria is, in a way, a cousin of Iran. Iran for quite some time now, has had political influence in the Syrian government, which in Israel’s fiery view is basically just an extension of Iran which makes Syria Israel’s enemy. This bombing of the airport, will cause delayed humanitarian support which is needed for the survival of many Syrians even if they are in Israels eyes, “bad guys.”

Analyzing the possible outcomes and current meanings of the actions taken by Israel, it can be assumed the action is that of an attack on an Iranian proxy, but also a sort of self-ish as humanitarian support is delayed as a result which shows why the U.S has been moving away from Israel as they grow increasingly radical in their military actions, and the uncared for collateral damage caused by their attacks. This attack will result in increased Syrian-Israeli tensions, as this attack was in a way, a cheap shot at a country trying to get help for its people. Of course, Syria is used to being attacked by Israel, this attack is definitely different as it is indirectly harming a variable amount of innocent people affected by the earthquakes. This is also not taking into account the possible harm to international humanitarian aid already arrived that could have been inflicted by the Israeli attack. This could raise some criticism and negative statements/comments from international humanitarian communities and nations. Continuing the analysis of Israeli reasons behind the attack on the airport, for the past few years Israel has been bombing and attacking Syrian airbases and airports to slow down Iran’s spread into syria, which hasn’t seen much criticism from Iran as Iran knows it will still likely get what it wants. Although this attack won’t mean much for Israels war on Iran’s spread, it will be interesting to see its effect on future attack similar to this as people start to see the sort of unhinged and child-like breakout attacks and uncalled for retaliation destruction caused by Israels sort-of policy of “6 eyes for an eye.”

Connecting this article to topics learned in class, it is geopolitically a goal of Israel to keep Iran away from its borders and neighboring countries/territories. Although Iran is constantly encroaching on Israel in closer proximities such as West Bank and Palestine, Israel is obviously trying to keep up its image of being unforgiving, and promote the idea that Israel does not want Iran expanding into any region as they continue to attack Iranian proxy bases/groups and keep them constantly being attacked even if the Iranians are getting past their attacks, as it is virtually impossible to stop all spread in their position. This is very easily observable as Iran continues to have nearly unlimited military movement in Iraq and government control in Syria.
