A UN mission to investigate the immigrant crisis in Libya is now accusing Libya of crimes against humanity, and the EU in enabling said war crimes. Libya itself is currently a fractured country, divided in war between two rivaling factions. But the migrants who are passing through, trying to get to Europe have been found to be victims of torture, sexual slavery, rape, slavery, killing and disappearances on at least 2,800 occasions. The investigators also found that those held in detention were subjugated to inadequate food, water, sanitation, exercise, light, medical care, legal counsel and access to family members. The investigators claimed that while the EU isn’t guilty of crimes against humanity, it is guilty of enabling the migrants conditions. The security forces, coast guard and militia groups committing these crimes are. And although the investigators have talked to victim Libyans and migrants, few are willing to seek legal justice because of fear of repercussion. The Libyan security forces especially have been curtailing the rights of those they swore to protect, notably punishing criticism and assembly.
To be honest, I don’t know that much about Libya or the situation in the country. I do know that the region has been entrenched in war for a long time, and that migrants from Africa have been going through the Mediterranean trying to get to Europe. All I can do right now is hope that the situation gets better for everyone, and that those guilty of the war crimes are brought to justice.
