In 2011, Syria was suspended from the Arab league following leader Bashar Al-Assad’s violent attempts to stop an uprising, which has since evolved into a civil war. Jordan’s prime minister, Ayman Safadi, has stated that Syria has regained the 22 votes necessary to rejoin the Arab League, but there are a myriad of challenges revolving the resolution of Syrias civil war which must be sorted out beforehand.

So much of the talk of Syria solving all of their problems and rejoining the Arab League seem symbolic, there’s SO much reconstruction of Syria that must happen before they can even think of Western sanctions being lifted. Until reading this article, I was completely unaware of Syria’s attempt at rebuilding and the war possibly coming to an end, but after reading more into it, it seems that Assad has claimed victory in Syria, something that the rest of the world has effectively ignored. The conflict has not ended, however, it has just temporarily waned. Most of the country remains volatile, some regions more than others.

This relates to what we’re doing in class because it centers around the treatment of refugees and the human rights crisis that the Syrian war produced.
