The United States secretary of state recently visited Israel to solidify American support. However, he also urged Israel to allow for safe passage and humanitarian treatment of Gazan refugees. This is an especially pressing matter, as the Israeli army is preparing for a potential ground invasion, which would ultimately result in more casualties and civilian displacement. The United States government believes that though the Israeli authorities are frustrated with the conflict, they must adhere to the ethical boundaries that even war itself has. This proposal for humanitarian aid was rejected by Israeli officials who claimed that the total siege will not cease until their captives are returned.
The United States support of Israel, which was strengthened by this meeting between the secretary of state and the Israeli prime minister, will likely prevent the entrance of Iran and other enemies of Israel into the conflict. In fact, the United States sent an aircraft carrier battle group to warn off other countries who might be conspiring to take advantage of the war. This support, offered by the United States, is valuable as it is an attempt to prevent further complication of the issue. If groups such as Iran, Hezbollah, and Syria were to join the conflict, there would likely be more casualties and damage across the board which opposes the intentions of the United States government.
In class, we have discussed the levels on which international decisions must be analyzed. In this situation, the United States government considered the effects of the war on the international community. They understood that there existed a possibility that Israeli enemies would take advantage of the conflict, so they took preventative measures against that. Additionally, they considered the effects that the war would have on individuals, and advocated for the protection of Gazan civilians. Considering the effects of actions from many different perspectives is crucial in making well informed decisions for a country.
