Palestinian killed in alleged clash with Israeli police in East Jerusalem

An armed 20-year-old man from the eastern sector of the city made his way to the Shalem Police station and opened fire on police standing out front. This caused one police officer to be severely injured and the other officer who was hit was lightly wounded, the suspect attempted to flee the scene but his efforts were not successful. As the Israeli reporter Al Jazeera’s Hoda Abdel-Hamid described it “The Israeli police say the attacker has been ‘neutralized’. Now, that’s the word they use to say that indeed he has been killed”.

This still has major implications for the nonstop rising tensions between the Israelis and Palestinians. If mass shootings and bombings continue to pile up causing unnecessary deaths and horrific aftermaths then there is no telling where this conflict could end up. You have shooters and bombers coming from outside of the country as well as along the borders sneaking into the cities on the border to cause chaos. Things like this are continuing to pile up in Israel because of the air strikes and artillery fire on the blockaded Gaza Strip as death totals are piling up into the thousands on both sides.

This connects to our class because it brings up the question of whether it will take for any country whose interests align with Israel or Palestine to start to deploy troops. The U.S. has already started to help with aid like sending tanks, artillery, and ammunition to aid the Israelis but I don’t think the U.S. will get to the point of sending troops just due to the fact that our interests don’t involve getting fully involved with this conflict.
