The United Nations and United Kingdom think a two state solution is needed to bring peace to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The UN Secretary- General, Antonio Guterres, claims that denying Palestinian statehood would prolong the war in Gaza. At a UN meeting, Guterres stated that Israel’s rejection of a two state solution was unacceptable and would cause more problems across the globe. On January 31st, David Cameron, a British foreign secretary was supposed to go to Israel in hopes of pushing the idea of ceasing fire. He then was supposed to meet with the Palestinian President to discuss the two state solution. Due to the consistant and major damage the war is causing to the citizens of Palestine, the EU’s top diplomat stated that Israel’s plan to destroy Hamas is not working and is mostly impacting the individuals surrounding. According to the article, people want this conflict to stop altogether, allow aid to get into the countries, and get the hostages out.
The two state solution is a great idea in my opinion. It would save tons of lives and allow each state a say in how the other can access their land. Although, I don’t think either state will ever agree on it. They have been in this battle for lots of decades and aren’t going to settle until they have complete control over the other state. It is very hard to look at the issue today and pick a side you hope will win. They have tons of history and the current leaders or the amount of killing they are doing today should not be the entire reason you side with that country.
In class, we have discussed the term “high security risk”. Something that is very concerning to the safety of ones country at the moment. Israel is a high security risk to Palestine as well as, Palestine is a high security risk to Israel. They both are capable, willing, and likely to cause harm on the other state right now.
