This past Friday Lebanon officials have decided to close most land borders connecting Syria, only leaving the main one in Beirut to be connected to Damascus, Syrian capital. This decision was made not long after an Israeli airstrike damaged a border crossing in northern Lebanon. Jordan officials have also decided to close some of their borders into Syria. These decisions were made after the severe violence that has been going on the past couple months. The most recent reports are that Israel says ‘thousands’ of food packs were delivered to besieged northern Gaza, Kurdish-led force in Syria says it has taken positions along Iraq border, many displaced Palestinians at an aid kitchen in southern Gaza leave empty-handed, and Israel reinforces troops in Golan Heights amid Syria tensions.
These events are the aftermath of the nonstop violence that has been taking over the Middle East the past couple of months. There will be a lasting impact on trade and transit in the area. Mainly because it is so new but even in years to come there could be tension with transit. There is no telling how long the borders will be closed. I think some levels of the reactions are understandable because all of the violence and the terror. I think we will see more states taking stiffer sides.
Lebanon could either continue to block contact with Syria or open borders back up once conflicts have settled. The issue is there is no sign of conflicts fully coming to a close. There will always be tension. This is really seen through out history. Syria will have to find other ways to do trade or they will accept that borders or closed. Though I doubt that will with stand.
In class we discussed lasting affects of actions taken by governments. It is written in history everywhere. Like in Iraq with America, in the show we watched in class we watched many people chanting things like,”Down with America.” People hold grudges and countries are ran be states. So states act as humans, which can be a good and bad thing. There is evidence to believe that something similar may happen in the coming months.
