President Donald Trump announced that he intends to intervene in Sudan’s civil war, saying the decision came after a personal request from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during the prince’s visit to Washington, DC. Trump made the pledge both at the Saudi Investment Forum and on Truth Social, claiming his administration began working on the issue within 30 minutes of the appeal. He said he would coordinate with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and other regional partners to halt the atrocities and stabilize Sudan.

Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The war has caused widespread civilian deaths, mass displacement, famine in cities such as el-Fasher and Kadugli, and documented cases of ethnic and sexual violence. More than four million people have fled the country. Trump’s pledge comes as he continues to promote himself as a “peace president,” though critics question the effectiveness and accuracy of some of his claimed peace achievements.

I chose this article because out of a lot of the Middle East conflicts this is one I’ve heard the least about. Sudan having had three civil wars within the last 40 years is something worth taking action on and that is what Trump is now doing, along with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and other Arabian countries. This action is important because it demonstrates the relationship between the US and specifically Saudi Arabia as they agree to work together to help the Sudan war. As 4 million people are forced to flee Sudan due to food insecurity and violence, this war has started to affect surrounding countries with the flow of people moving in.

President Trump declared that he will take action on the Sudan war after meeting with Prince Mohammed from Saudi Arabia. Trump started working on this issue a half an hour after the Prince’s request and is working with other Arab countries too. Trump, as he has helped with many wars in his presidency so far, has a promising power to the Arabs giving hope to giving humanitarian aid to the Sudan war.

The US and Saudi Arabia, along with other Middle East states, are cooperating at the Kantian level in international environments. The US and Saudi Arabia are working through reciprocity because the US is helping control the Sudan war, so that the Arab countries don’t have to worry about the Sudan population moving into their countries and in return, the US gets lots of resources from the Middle East. These countries are working multilaterally to help out Sudan.
