Major cities across Sudan, including the capital Khartoum and the coastal city Port Sudan, were plunged into darkness after drone strikes hit a key power plant in Atbara, in the country’s East, amidst the ongoing civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces(SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces(RSF). The power facility, which is in a government-controlled area, caught fire and was severely damaged, leading to widespread blackouts. Officials blamed the RSF for the attack , which is part of a growing campaign of drone warfare that has increasingly targeted critical infrastructure. Footage circulating on social media of the burning plant has been verified by Al Jazeera. Two civil defence workers were killed while trying to put out the fire, and others were injured when a second drone struck as rescue efforts were underway. Residents initially thought it followed the strikes. The attack underscores the intensifying conflict and its severe impact on civilians, infrastructure, and daily life in Sudan.
This article is important because it shows how the civil war in the country of Sudan highlights the human casualties and how the RSF is attacking civilians. The RSF is using drones to attack infrastructures like hospitals which is killing people in many ways. One impact that this has on the region is that Sudan could lose more land and it could potentially be South Sudan, who broke away in 2011. The RSF has some support from South Sudan but they are mainly using this conflict as a gateway to secure oil from the region. I think one way to solve or at least postpone the conflict is to send UN peacekeepers to the region to break up the conflict.
The SAF could respond to this event by using it as an excuse to use lethal force to deal with the RSF or they could keep trying to achieve peace with them. The RSF could either keep killing civilians which would likely bring regional powers or countries with an interest in the region into the war to stop the violence or they could seek peace with the other side.
This relates to class by being an Intrastate conflict because of it being a civil war between two sides of the same state. Another way this article relates to class is through Interventionism. In my last article about Sudan, The U.S. and other states from the Middle East have tried to intervene and have a ceasefire take place.
