The decision goes against the precedent set by the US and other UN members which dates back to Israel’s creation. Recognition may have been intended to strengthen US-Israeli ties, however the immediate affect of the decision seems to be a further destabilization of an already tense region. If Israel’s muslim-majority neighboring countries can come to accept the US recognition, decades of tensions could be absolved, but based upon recent conflicts in the region, peace may not come that easily. What is more likely is that muslim identity will be challenged, strengthening the influence of jihadist groups in the region and creating yet more anti-western feelings. This may ultimately raise the question of whether the US is still maintaining such a firm presence in the middle-east and could end up being forced to lessen involvement in the region.<\/p>\n
Other world leaders, such as those belonging to the European Union and the UN, have expressed concern over the issue, and have been working to maintain favorable relationships with middle-eastern countries. Particularly sharp criticisms, though, have come from Turkey and Russia. If these powers, which the US has often viewed as threatening, continue this anti-US rhetoric at the same time US popularity in the middle-east could be falling, Russia and Turkey could potentially gain more influence over the region. If the US truly wishes to promote peace and stability in the region, while keeping competing interests at bay, much care will be needed in the area of diplomacy going forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
The unexpected recognition of Jerusalem by President Trump as the capital of Israel has received little support and much criticism.
