In the budget, the government announced an increase in value-added tax and social contributions. The new financial budget has also added an increased priced on some goods and increased taxes on imports. Tunisia’s economy has been in the deep end since their 2011 revolution which led to their former leader, Zine El Abidine Ben, being forced to flee his position after more than twenty years in power. That 2011 revolution was ignited by the country’s dramatic unemployment rates and fear of corruption. After seven years and nine governments, those same problems are still extremely visible. The citizens of Tunisia are either not working, or working too hard for too little money. This new budget raises taxes for the poor and middle class when trying to buy life necessities such as food, water, and medicine. The budget has received intense backlash which started with peaceful protests such as a theater sit-in, but it has recently led to massive protests in the street, ultimately leading to road blockage, raging fires, vandalism, teargas, hundreds of arrests, and death. I understand that the government is trying to revive their economy but raising the taxes on your already poor and failing country is not the way to do it. Most of their people were already struggling to make a decent amount of money before the budget was announced. Protesters have started to vandalize, rob, and set fire to government buildings to show their anger. I feel that it will only get much worse from here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
The Tunisian government has dropped their 2018 budget and in which opposition groups and protesters are calling unfair.
