The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has claimed intelligence provided by his country
\nfoiled an alleged plot by the Islamic State group to blow up a plane from Sydney using a device
\nsmuggled inside a meat mincer.
\n\u201cThe Israeli intelligence services thwarted the downing of an Australian plane, an unimaginable
\nslaughter,\u201d the Israeli leader told an American Jewish conference in Jerusalem on Wednesday.
\n\u201cThis would have caused a major disruption in global air transport and this is only one of dozens
\nof terrorist attacks we have foiled around the world,\u201d Netanyahu said, later referring to the alleged
\nplot as an Isis operation.
\nThe Israeli army said one of its intelligence units, named 8200, provided the information in 2017
\nleading to the arrest of Isis militants who were working \u201ctoward the execution of the attack\u201d.<\/p>\n
The elite unit gathers and analyses intelligence using sophisticated information technology. The
\nIsraeli military said thwarting the alleged attack \u201csaved the lives of dozens\u201d but did not say which
\nflight had been targeted.
\nLast year two brothers were arrested in Sydney \u2013 Khaled Khayat and Mahmoud Khayat \u2013 and
\ncharged with plotting to bring down an Etihad Airways passenger jet destined to fly to Abu Dhabi
\nfrom Sydney.
\nThey were accused of trying to smuggle an improvised device inside a meat mincer onto a plane
\ndue to leave Sydney on 15 July, but the attempt was aborted before they reached security.
\nAustralian police said the plot had been orchestrated by \u201ca senior member of the Islamic State\u201d
\nbased overseas. It was prevented when foreign intelligence agencies intercepted communications
\nfrom the Syrian jihadist, police said.
\nDays after the arrests, Lebanon\u2019s interior minister said Beirut had monitored the brothers for
\nmore than a year and had worked with Australian authorities to disrupt the alleged attack.
\nEtihad earlier this week confirmed it was working with authorities in Australia on their
