{"id":1941,"date":"2018-09-20T14:04:40","date_gmt":"2018-09-20T14:04:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baileyonlineclassroom.com\/middleeastandnorthafricablog\/?p=1941"},"modified":"2018-09-20T14:04:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-20T14:04:40","slug":"palestinians-killed-in-separate-events-in-gaza-and-east-jerusalem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baileyonlineclassroom.com\/middleeastandnorthafricablog\/2018\/09\/20\/palestinians-killed-in-separate-events-in-gaza-and-east-jerusalem\/","title":{"rendered":"Palestinians killed in separate events in Gaza and East Jerusalem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three Palestinians were killed in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/city\/gaza.html\">Gaza Strip<\/a>\u00a0and occupied\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/east-jerusalem.html\">East Jerusalem<\/a>\u00a0after they were shot by Israeli forces in separate events.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In northern Gaza, thousands of protesters demonstrated on Tuesday afternoon near the Israeli checkpoint crossing Erez, referred to by Palestinians as the Beit Hanoun crossing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The protest was called for by the National\u00a0High\u00a0Committee to Break the Siege and was against the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/01\/cuts-unrwa-funding-180116193513823.html\">cuts in funding by the United States<\/a>\u00a0to the main United Nations refugee agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters also demanded an end to the 12-year blockade imposed on the coastal enclave.<\/p>\n<p>Two men were killed as Israeli forces opened fire on the protesters. Gaza&#8217;s health ministry identified the men as Mohammad Abu Naji, 34, and Ahmad Mohammad Omar, 20.<\/p>\n<p>More than 30 others were wounded, the ministry added.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinians in Gaza have been protesting along the fence east of the strip against the siege and for their right of return as part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/interactive\/2018\/05\/palestinians-great-march-return-human-cost-180516110538165.html\">Great March of Return<\/a>\u00a0rallies since March 30.<\/p>\n<p>More than 170 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli sniper fire and 18,000 others wounded.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the US declared it would halt all funding to UNRWA, creating a $300m deficit.
