A government is silencing media that is critical of them and got caught. The Saudi government could have done a wide variety of other things besides killing a reporter. They had been trying to stall giving out the facts of whether they killed Khashoggi or not most likely, because the Saudi government was hoping to have the 24-hour news cycle save them. What I mean by that is that is the Saudi government was hoping for some bigger news story to come along and take the spotlight so the results of the Saudi’s “investigation” on his murder would be page four or so. But with pressure mounting on them from other countries they need to come out with the truth before other countries do. Turkey claims to have incriminating evidence against the Saudis, but they have yet to release the information, the Saudi’s could either hope Turkey is bluffing and wait it out or come out with the truth right now. The Saudis put themselves in this predicament because they had to kill a reporter in a really obvious way leaving little to no doubt that they did it before investigations even started. Why would they do this? Did they underestimate how big this story would be? Did they just think that they killed Kashoggi and that no one would care or notice? Maybe they thought others would be too afraid to do anything about Khashoggi being killed? The Saudi government killing a reporter in this fashion really shows how powerful the Saudis think they are and then that illusion falls apart around them as many other countries all want the real answers about who killed Khashoggi and why. This could hurt the country as well because other countries might boycott their oil because Saudi Arabia has a corrupt government. If that does happen the story about what happened to Khashoggi could cost them more then he ever could.

The Khashoggi case is a huge deal right now, and for good reason.
