In much of the Middle East there is a lot of civil unrest. In Palestine, Palestinian forces are routinely arresting and torturing citizens. The two main groups guilty of this are The Fatah-led Palestinian Authority (PA)\u00a0 in the occupied West Bank and Hamas authorities in the Gaza Strip. According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), these groups are routinely arresting peaceful critics. Once arrested it is claimed that the security forces “often taunt, threaten, beat, and put detainees in painful stress positions.” However the PA and Hamas deny all the claims. Most of the arrests they make are,\u00a0“for peaceful criticism, particularly on social media, among independent journalists, on university campuses, and at demonstrations.”<\/p>\n
The Hamas and Fatah are the two most dominating political parties in Palestine. They are both focused on the goal of building a Palestinian state. However, while they do have a similar goal, their ideas are vastly different, causing this feud between the two. It is unlikely Palestine will be able to successfully get anything accomplished until feud is resolved. There have been many attempts to come to an agreement, however the situation continues to worsen as the Fatah and Hamas arrest supporters of the rival party. It is likely the situation will never get better unless one group can “be the bigger person” and put the feud to an end.<\/p>\n
I believe that this chaos going on in Palestine is greatly hurting its chances of becoming a true country. Currently, 135 countries recognize Palestine as a state; however, many important countries do not, including the U.S. I believe that if Palestine could fix all their internal issues and become a useful ally, they could officially become a state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
