Due to Yemen’s four-year long civil war, many families are relocating and fleeing their home towns and cities. More than 445,000 Yemenis have fled the city since the summer. This creates problems because now these families have no home or place to stay, forcing them to come up with a solution. In one specific situation, a nine-year-old boy is alone most of the time, trying to get a deflated football to bounce off of a brick wall, right next to a classroom he sleeps in. This little boy has been doing the same thing for six months straight. Kicking bits of dirt, and throwing a deflated football at a wall, he says, makes the days go by faster. Things like those also remind him of happier times in his life. Months before this, he would run around with his best friend and play football in his school playground during his lunch breaks, in the city of Hodeidah. Not only does this have a negative emotional toll on him, but his family too. In an interview, his mother mentions that he yells at his sister like no child should yell at a family member. She also said that the sound of bombs and the poverty they live in have taken a heavy toll on his emotional well-being. The capital was reeling from more than four years of devastating coalition air strikes. The debris from bombed houses and stores lined the streets and poverty was widespread. The conditions within the buildings consisted of blankets and dirty plates laying on the floors and more than a dozen people crammed into each classroom. The schools smelled like mould and faeces and the bathrooms did not have showers in them. People were living off of rice and bread and this is just a continuous problem. The Yemenis are facing a major Humanitarian crisis and it doesn’t seem like its going to end.

In Yemen, many schools in the capital are now serving as homes for many homeless, displaced families.
