While Saudi Arabia has been becoming more westernized as a result of their close relationship with the United States, Saudi Arabia still follows the traditional sharia law when it comes to the treatment of women. As a result, Saudi Arabia officials have
been detaining and torturing women who express themselves and push for a equal society. Luckily, 36 states at the UN Human Rights Council agreed that the detainment of these women was unacceptable and Saudi Arabia must release them. As states continue to modernize, equality is becoming a more attainable idea for women. There has been a large number of movements and protests worldwide that advocate for women’s rights, specifically in the Middle East, a region dominated by Islamic beliefs which typically do not center around women’s equality. Often times these movements catch the attention of the leaders of states and some laws, even if they are minimal, are implemented. However, the opposite is happening in Saudi Arabia. Instead of listening to the female population and fulfilling their requests, the Saudi Arabian government is jailing women who speak out. Thankfully other states are speaking out against this treatment of women. If states that preside over Saudi Arabia like the Unites States do
not condone the jailing of women who speak out for equality, it is likely that Saudi Arabia will cooperate and release them. While it is hard to determine whether or not Saudi Arabia will implement change in society soon after the release, there will be more pressure on Saudi Arabia from outside states which may result in equality in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Following May of 2018, Saudi Arabia began arresting female activists who were fighting for equal rights after Saudi Arabia reversed the law that gave women the right to operate a vehicle.
