Mrs. Nettleton wailed as she lifted the niqab from a girl’s face she believed to be her granddaughter in a Syrian refugee camp. An Australian show accompanied Nettleton to the Islamic State and broadcasted the reunion with the 16 year old, crying , “I feel like I am dreaming”.

More than 200 Australian citizens have left to join the Islamic State, with 70 of them being minors according to a 2018 report from the International Center for the Study of Radicalization at King’s College London. Nettleton is staying in a safe house in the Turkish capital and campaigns for the rescue of her grandchildren. The report also states that the Australian government is under enormous pressure to rescue to minors who have not died in the war but are weary of sending Australians to do the rescuing. Nettleton has been in the Middle East patiently waiting for three weeks for a response from the Australian government, clearly stating that it was not the choice of the now orphaned children to move to Syria.

Hearing this story makes me question the character of the mothers who decide to get involved with a jihadist fighter and risk the lives of her children to pursue a terrible life in a third world country. I believe that the Australian government should immediately take back all minors and imerese them into deradicalization programs right away. Encouraging their original beliefs and spreading western ideas into their minds will brighten the future and demolish anything they learned from ISIS. Nettleton is clearly extremely cooperative and will meet any requirement set by her country to be able to do well by her grandchildren.

This upcoming election should not stall answers given to Nettleton to please its right wing party, and instead shift to the focus of bringing home all minors and giving attention to increasing their quality of life. These children should not have to suffer at the hands of their parents’ mistakes.

Karen Nettleton, from Melbourne, Australia has been using the past five years to search for her grandchildren who were taken from her by their mother from Sydney in 2014 to join the Islamic State in Syria.
