Aid workers from Turkey and more countries were working to build safe shelters for displaced Syrians in the Idlib province, one of the only safe areas left in Syria. This single province has become home to displaced people trying to flee to Turkey but with no luck due to the large population of migrants there already. Turkey is attempting to send more supplies and troops to support the displaced people, but it is still not enough.

In Idlib, families are setting up makeshift camps with very little supplies to help them keep warm and stay healthy. Families have resorted to burning all their belongings in order to keep warm during the brutal winters currently devastating the area. The objects being burned include shoes, cardboard, clothing, and any other things they can find even if the fumes are harmful. The fumes and unsafe shelters have caused suffocation during sleep that results in the people not ever waking up again. These deaths by suffocation can be avoided by having safer shelters, better resources, and healthier ways to stay warm.

The area where fighting has not occurred in the Idlib province is shrinking as the Syrian government and the fighters are encroaching on the safe area. The area where displaced people can live is shrinking and the amount of people who need shelter is exponentially growing. This situation is resulting in catastrophic conditions and an increasing amount of deaths. Surrounding countries say they can’t take in any more migrants and Syria has no more places with safe living spaces. The only way to fix this problem and avoid deaths is by finding new places for the displaced Syrian people to go. The conflict has been going on for so long that a large number of Syrian migrants have already gone to surrounding countries resulting in nowhere else for them to go. As the fighting gets closer and the conditions become more unsafe, I believe the only way to save the displaced Syrians is by them going into another country but very little to no countries are open to them.

The crisis that aid workers were trying to avoid has become a reality in the past week.
