The plan is intended to resolve ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, however it was conceived without Palestinian input and clearly favored Israeli priorities.

The United states has previously backed minor adjustments to the Israeli boundaries that existed before the Arab-Israeli war of 1967. In contrast, the Trump plan proposes a West Bank riddled with interconnected chunks of Israeli territory containing Jewish settlements, many of them largely encircled by Palestinian lands. This would mean the Palestinians must surrender their claim to large amounts of West Bank land. This includes locations where Israel has built settlements that the majority of the world regards as illegal as well as valuable areas along the Jordanian border.

The Trump plan promises to leave both settlers and Palestinians in their current homes. it maps out a series of linked settlements and other areas that would officially become Israeli territory in the midst of the West Bank. American proposals in the past spoke of returning those areas to the Palestinians for inclusion in their state by removing tens of thousands of Israelis from the settlements.

In response, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas plans to visit the United Nations to address the Security Council on his rejection of the new US Middle East plan. This will result in the submission of a draft resolution to the council. According to Mansour, Abbas plans to use his visit to the UN to “put before the entire international community the reaction of the Palestinian people and the Palestinian leadership against this onslaught against the national rights of the Palestinian people by the Trump administration”.

It is unlikely that Israel and Palestine will come to a conclusion that will satisfy both parties. Trump’s current plan heavily favors Israel, a country whose actions are seen as illegal by most of the world. If the UN were to get involved, it would apply more pressure onto the U.S. to propose something that satisfies both parties, or at least gives Palestine some say in the matter.

Three years in the making, President Trump’s long awaited Middle East plan was revealed on Tuesday, January 28th.
