A more successful part of the meeting was the pardoning of an Israeli woman after she was arrested in Russia for possession of illegal drugs.

Netanyahu said the Russia-Israeli relations were the best they’ve ever been. Two similarities the countries do hold are their allegedly corrupt leaders. While Netanyahu was in Washington he was formally indicted on corruption charges in Jerusalem courts. Netanyahu and Putin both gain prominence with their excessive personalities and “fan base” following and are accused of heavy corruption, but still manage to hold power in their respective states.

The influence of Russia in the Middle East seems to mirror that of the United States, now with a significant foot in Syria, Russia is interested in the region and may consider allying with Israel as a strategic move. This interest does not follow previous actions of Russia specifically within the UN, a very pro-Palestine body, but because of Russia’s involvement in Syria, Israel is larger on the radar. Israel has contributed to the Syrian War itself, launching airstrikes on Islamic Jihad sites.

On an individual level Putin may be more amicable towards Netanyahu to help strengthen ties with Trump in Washington. Even all three of these politicians hold their fan base through large personalities. Although Trump loves to be one of the big players in the game, slightly stepped back from the international stage after withdrawing troops from Syria. Quickly after, Putin filled his shoes in the region.

With an upcoming US presidential election, the various corruption charges against Netanyahu and the aging of Putin (and the resignation of Medvedev) the fate of the region is unknown. It can be assumed that Trump’s plan will likely accomplish little and Putin’s presence in Syria and the Middle East will grow.

Putin recently met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss President Trump’s Middle East plan and the plan for a jailed Israeli woman in Moscow. Immediately following Netanyahu’s visit to Washington DC, he stopped in Moscow, but President Putin had no desire to publicly support or refute Trump’s plan.
