Issues such as Netanyahu’s corruption charges, and his failure to manage the coronavirus pandemic and the economy are now being brought into light by protesters.

Protests, called for by Israel’s Black Flags movement, were scheduled in 1,200 locations throughout the country.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has been accused of fraud, bribery, and breach of trust; all of which he has denied. Israelis are also calling for action over the government’s failure to effectively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. After quickly reopening their economy, infections jumped, leading to yet another closure. The country’s response has severely impacted its citizens; especially those whose health has been impacted, and those who own businesses to run in the state of the economy.

Netanyahu put together an emergency government in the spring, in an attempt to address the pandemic, but its efforts failed due to conflict within its own organization.

The protests calling for Benjamin Netanyahu’s resignation from office may have major lasting impacts on the future or its government and leaders.

The Israeli demonstrations are making voices of citizens heard, giving them influence in their government and pressuring for change. If the protests are successful enough, Israel may see a new Prime Minister come into the office, elected by the President, Reuven Rivlin, and executive power will be handed over to a new leader. If protests don’t convince Netanyahu to step down, further civil unrest and riots are likely to occur, and citizens will continue to lose trust in their government

Furthermore, the failure of Netanyahu and the Israeli government to control the coronavirus pandemic will also have damaging effects on the country. Because of impatience during the initial lockdown, Israel is now experiencing a second one, resulting in an unsteady economy, major job loss, and suffering civilians. A continuously declining economy will be difficult to recover from once the pandemic is fully controlled within the country.

Israel’s government operates as a presidential republic with a semi-presidential system. Its president is the head of state, and holds mainly ceremonial significance, while its prime minister holds the government’s executive powers. Israel’s sovereignty continues to be disputed amongst other countries due to the Israel-Palestine conflict, but the majority of UN member states recognize it as an official state.

On an independent level, the current conflict between Israel’s citizens and the government is directly connected to the actions taken, and not taken, by Prime Minister Netanyahu. Expanding a bit further, on a domestic and state level, the corruption brought up inside the Israeli government can be linked as a major issue causing unrest within the country.

Link to Article: Tens of thousands rally in Israel calling on Netanyahu to resign Israelis have gathered all over their country to protest the actions of their Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and demand his resignation.
