Devastating fires are breaking out all throughout Syria. There are hundreds of hectares that have burned in the countryside of Syria’s coastal Latakia area, Tartus area, and central Homs area. Dozens of fires were burning, including 45 in Latakia and 33 in Tartus. The cause for these fires are strong winds and a heatwave that are unlikely for this time of year in Lebanon and Syria. The health ministry said two people died in the Latakia area on Friday as a result of the fires, and that 70 people in the area were taken to the hospital suffering from breathing difficulties caused by these fires. This is the first time in Syria’s history where they are facing large numbers of fires in a single day and the lakatia fire team said, ” We are facing the largest series of fires seen in the Lakita area than we have in years.”

These fires are bad news for Syria, as they will most likely cause a big blow to their financial compartment. This will add to their already very difficult financial situation going on right now in the country. Syria is also currently going through a shortage of fuel right before the upcoming winter months, causing the country to make power cuts. It’s going to be hard for Syria to combat as they have been ridden of war for the past 9 years and the hospitals are not able to keep up with all the covid cases as they have been seriously impacted by these wars as well.

Along with everyone else being hit with these fires, farmers and people that rely largely on agriculture for the profit are being highly impacted. This could cause a shortage of food and supplies in Syria, which would make the already deeply affected economy go down more as the prices on goods would increase to where people can no longer buy them.

In class right now we are talking about NGO’s, IGO’s, and MGO’s as one of our topics recently. An NGO that works in Syria and could be used greatly during this time is CAFOD, Catholic Agency for Overseas Development.. CAFOD is and organization that helps with different types of disasters and developments. CAFOD is going to be relied upon heavily as these wild fires continue and people that have been evacuated and forced out of their homes for help. Also another NGO that could play a big role in assisting the people effected by these fires is the IRS, Iternational Rescue Commitee. They respond the the worlds worst humanitarian crises and helps people survive and build their life back up. Syria is going to need some backup from these two NGO’s in order to collect themselves and solve the ongoing problems facing their country.
