Algeria, being an important tie to the Mediterranean for migrants, finds many refugees crossing its borders. In an attempt to control their borders, Algeria has seen an increase in deportations- more than 3,400 since September alone.

Lauren Seibert, a researcher at the Human Rights Watch said, “Algeria is entitled to protect its borders, but not to arbitrarily detain and collectively expel migrants, including children and asylum seekers, without a trace of due process,”

Refugees have explained their experiences with Algerian officers, describing them as ignorant and hostile. One of the migrants was quoted saying, “They told us, ‘you came to Algeria with nothing, and you will leave with nothing’.”

Many countries around Africa have been heavily impacted by the refugee crisis, some handling the situation differently from others. Ethiopia, for example, has taken in thousands of refugees, according to the UN. The main issue that arises is that a disproportionate amount of refugees puts pressure on preexisting crises like water and healthcare access. Because of this problem, Algeria is put into a tough situation- choosing between taking in migrants and refugees or protecting their own stability. In this case, Algeria has largely decided on the latter, moving their migrants over to their neighboring country to the south, Niger.

Niger is experiencing problems regarding the climate crisis, COVID-19, food, water, and energy insecurity, and socio-political conflicts, which have further complicated the situation. This makes it hard for Niger to support the additional amount of migrants being sent over by Algeria; this could lead to rising tensions between the two countries.

Furthermore, Algeria may experience issues within its own domestic borders, regarding the way it has been dealing with the migrants and refugees. Refugees have not been correctly evaluated and should be given fair court reviews before being deported. The HRW has already brought up the issue, and if inhumane treatments continue, the Algerian government will have to address the issue to avoid conflict from its own citizens or foreign countries intervening.

Algeria- officially named the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, is recognized as a sovereign state. Likewise, Niger, officially known as the Republic of Niger, also has recognized sovereignty.

As mentioned, Niger experiences issues obtaining vital recourses for its citizens; as well as issues controlling social and political instability, which leads to struggles when managing the unbalanced amount of refugees sent from Algeria. Luckily, certain NGOs have stepped in to help the situation. For example, the International Rescue Committee (IRC), has involved itself in providing support to Nigerien citizens and allowing the country to support more refugees that are sent over, due to Algeria’s deportations. This is a prime example of the impact different NGOs can have on specific issues around the globe.

Link to Article: Algeria expelling thousands of migrants across Niger border: HRW Recently, Algerian forces have detained and deported thousands of migrants, sending them over to Niger.
