There are hundreds of hectares of land completely destroyed and it’s only getting worse. The fire is tearing up Syria’s coastal latakia and tartus provinces. There have been dozens of reported fires throughout the coast, 45 in latakia and 33 in tartus. Even though there have been 2 deaths over 70 people have been hospitalized due to smoke inhalation. Syria’s Agriculture Minister Mohamaad Assan said on a radio show Friday that “For the first time in history, Syria is witnessing this large number of fires in a single day.” The Latakia fire brigade said they “were facing the largest series of fires in the Latakia province in years.”

An event like this will have a huge impact on the economy of Latakia, Tartus and Syria. Syria’s economy is not strong to begin with, they are restricted on oil because of US sanctions and their overall cash flow is minimal to begin with. Due to the severity of the fires and their location the government from both counties have evacuated a lot of people from their homes and they have seeked refuge in central Latakia and Tartus. The fires have also taken out industrial buildings. There is a warehouse being used to store a lot of the state-owned tobacco and the building was engulfed in flares and has been completely destroyed which will most likely add to the growing list of reasons why the government will be taking a substantial hit from this event. As the fires rage on the economy will continue to cripple and send Syria deeper into economic crisis and that will be difficult for them to get out of. Syria’s trade with other countries had slowed down significantly in the last few months, on top of that they have very little access to oil, which is one of their largest exports because of the US sanctions and on Syria and Iran.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/10/10/at-least-two-killed-as-forest-fires-burn-in-syria-lebanon There have been at least 2 people killed by huge forest fires currently raging through Syria.
