The Syrian government is responsible for the shelling in their attempts to get rid of the last Turkish rebel groups that remain in the country’s northeast region. In the areas surrounding where the shells hit 17 people were wounded. On the account of the White Helmets, a volunteer rescue team, when a shell hit a weekly market in Idlib it immediately killed a child. In a town just south of Idlib called Ariha, a shell killed 4 people including a 4 year old girl. The shelling came due to an 8 month truce between Russia and Turkey that is unravelling rapidly. In the last few months Syria has carried out several airstrikes including one that struck a training camp that killed dozens of Turkey backed fighters. The attacks sparked a series of retaliations throughout the area, resulting in hundreds of thousands of civilians fleeing to find safety from government advancements and continued strikes. As violence has spiked the International community has called for a cease fire and for Russia and Turkey to go back to peace talks.

Violence won’t bring any positives for either government especially when Syria is already war torn and destroyed. Over the past nine years civilians have had to flee in camps throughout Syria which has caused a divide throughout the country and each region is backed by different regional and international powers. All of the events that are going on in Syria are detrimental to the government as well as the repercussions happening in every region. For example, the airstrikes and fighting have caused hundreds of thousands of citizens to seek refuge in camps which still aren’t able to keep them safe. Millions of refugees are extremely exposed to covid in the camps because of poor sanitation and lack of access to basic medical supplies. Based on the amount of different economically detrimental events continuously happening throughout the county it appears that Syria has their hands full and they are slowly declining as the increase in violence and the rapid spread of covid rises uncontrollably.

This relates to class because we discussed that all the events between governments, especially conflicts, are complicated and never black and white. This situation is no different because Turkey and Russia are falling out of a truce in Syria’s war torn country and could soon be the world’s biggest war in the last 20 years. The Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad is trying to regain the Turkey occupied Idlib. Due to Turkey and Russia’s conflict Russia is backing Assad’s government to get the upper hand on the opposition. The conflict is not only resulting in the destruction of Idlib and the surrounding towns and villages but also the killing of innocent people in the process.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/11/4/shelling-in-syria-rebel-enclave-kills-seven-including-children In the city of Idlib, Syria, there were shell attacks that killed 7 people including 4 children.
