The attack was on Idlib city and two towns, Ariha to the south and Kefraya to the north. The shelling of Idlib killed four children, and at least 7 people in total. In the town of Ariha, a four year old child was killed among four other people. In the town of Kenfraya, two children were killed. An unravelled truce of eight months between Russia and Turkey resulted in this shelling. The Syrian government and its allied forces carried out an air strike in late October on rebels in the area that killed dozens of Turkey-backed guerilla fighters at their training camp. The international community is attempting to organize a nationwide ceasefire and resumption of peace talks.

My take is how awful it is that this isn’t even the first time children have died as a result of this Syrian war. The article mentions how this war has been going on for nine years and has already killed nearly half of a million people, and it makes me think about how many in that half a million were kids that weren’t even 10 years old. This war is unimaginable for Americans because the last time there was a war on American soil was the Civil War. This will definitely leave a lasting impact on the area, similar to how the Civil War left an ugly scar on the United States.

In class, we have been discussing the issues of global cooperation, and how they consist of military alliances, global warming, world hunger, free trade, and the one that applies here, human rights. The collective goods problem, the question of how to get countries to sacrifice their own resources and time, is most likely in play here. I’m sure that outside countries, like the United States and the United Kingdom, certainly want to help this humanitarian violation in Syria right now, but they are either tied up in their own legislation, the people of those countries don’t want to pay more in tax dollars on Syria, or Syria will not let people in to help with the war.

The Syrian government shelled the last rebel enclave in Syria’s northwest on November 4th, killing at least seven people, including four children.
